Animal Protection Agency (APA) www.apa.org.uk
The Animal Protection Agency (APA) is the UK organisation committed to ceasing the trade in wildlife for pets. Perhaps unbelievably, it is still legal in Britain to sell wild animals captured from other countries. The majority of wild-trapped animals die from the stress and disease that is associated with every stage of their harrowing journey. Next to habitat destruction, collection of animals for the pet trade is the main reason for the decline in many species. Attempts to regulate and control the trade have globally failed. The problem is getting worse, and time is running out! APA's site contains information on who they are, their current campaigns and how you can help them.

Grupo Ruas e Praças (GPR) is an NGO based in the city of Recife in the NE of Brazil. It works with children who live and work on the streets of Recife and those who are considered at risk and come from some of the most impoverished areas of the city. The organisation has been running for 18 years and over time has built up a strong methodology and body of experience and knowledge in its interventions with poor communities and those most marginalised in society. Harnessing the creative and artistic skills of young people, GRP employs an empowering approach that respects the voice and autonomy of the young person, to act as a stimulus to seek a better life, build up self-esteem, return or stay with the family and discourage involvement with drugs, violence and crime through positive reinforcing messages and trusting relationships.

Dirt Cafe project www.dirtcafe.com
The Dirt Cafe project provides a provocative solution to challenging the way we design, experience, consume and understand the world in which we live. The Dirt Cafe has been conceived and created out of a unique collaboration between designers, chefs, food retailers and producers, medical researchers, well-being specialists, scientists, social-entrepreneurs and many others.
The Dirt Cafe concept draws on the precedents of the Coffee House, the Salon, Café Society and meetings under the Banyan Tree, bringing together makers and shakers who are likely not always to agree with each other but may well produce some mould breaking conclusions and innovative ideas. Participation in Dirt Cafe's debates happens by invitation only, for reasons of enabling conversational flow, but the results are captured and communicated through various methods such as video streamed on to the web.
Put another way, the Dirt Cafe Debates present an alternative way to unlock knowledge and to connect people who might not otherwise meet and influence each other's thinking. In essence, the Dirt Cafe provides a temporary place for inventing and imagining potential scenarios for the near future.
More precisely, the project enables a lively event-based format for six special guests, one of whom is the facilitator of the Debate. The guests are invited to tackle an issue of global concern in a convivial setting over a provocative menu. The project is made to offer small numbers of people with specialised knowledge time and stimulation to generate alternative and strategic thinking in a way that does not happen in the predictable format of large-scale debating with a passive audience.
